Muscat

3/2/2009

Surrounded by striking mountains on one side and soft sandy shores along its coasts, Muscat is an ancient town, characterized by a unique civilization reflecting Arabian and Islamic influences. It maintains a medieval appearance with two ancient Portuguese forts guarding the rocky cove around which the town is built. In the heart of the old, walled-in city is the magnificent Sultan’s Palace and various ancient buildings, distinctive with Eastern Arabian style, Arabesque gates and beautiful engravings. The Muttrah Souq (bazaar) is without a doubt the most interesting souq in the Arab Gulf States - with a vast array of Arabian antiques, bright textiles and exquisite gold and silver jewelry. Muscat is indeed a treasure chest of places to see, where history comes alive and age-old secrets are revealed in a taste of timelessness. Muscat boasts fine museums. Distinctive with its clean silver sands, Qantab Beach is surrounded by mountains which prevent exposure to strong winds. Muscat is a photographer’s delight.

Salalah

3/5/2009 7:00:00 AM

3/5/2009 2:00:00 PM

Salalah is the capital of Dhofar province, which is the southern region of the Sultanate of Oman. Lovely parks and groves of banana, papaya, watermelon and vegetables give the city a tropical atmosphere and have earned it the name Garden City. Along the coast lie miles of uncrowded beaches, bordered by a brilliant blue sea. Other attractions include ancient forts, archaeological sites, fishing villages and the tombs of prophets. While it is mainly the rugged landscape and the beaches that appeal to visitors with a penchant for unspoiled locales, the modern and fast-growing city offers an interesting museum, architectural highlights such as the Al Husn Palace and colorful, bustling souks, where everything from frankincense and fragrant perfumes to gold and silver jewelry is sold.
Most of all, Salalah has to be appreciated as an off-the-beaten-track location and for the uniqueness that marks the Dhofar region.

Aden offers a number of interesting sights, including the ancient cisterns of Tawila dating back to 1st century A.D. In addition, there are the remains of a mosque from the 8th century, a 14th-century mosque and some interesting museums. Three and a half miles from the pier, Goldmore Beach is popular with local people and visitors. Remember, local customs require conservative dress. Located near the cisterns, the Ethnographic Museum houses interesting exhibits.

Al Hodeidah

3/8/2009 12:00:00 PM

3/8/2009 7:00:00 PM

After centuries of complete isolation, this land of myth and legend is today open to the world. Hodeidah, or Al Hudaydah, is the port for Sana'a and the Red Sea gateway to Yemen. It is also capital of Al Hudaydah province. Hodeidah is a base for trips into the villages of the mountainous interior or capital city of Sana'a. The distance to Sana'a from Hodeidah is 144 miles, part of it on steep, winding mountain road. Get a glimpse of local activities at the bustling Fish Market. Fishermen returning from the sea in the early morning hours display numerous species of fish and shellfish. Although Hodeidah is a fairly large, spread out city, it does not take long to see its attractions. The focal point is the People's Garden with a huge fountain in its center. The Turkish Quarters form the oldest part of Hodeidah - extending from the old market area. The Red Sea Houses are typical houses found in Hodeidah. They are three or four stories high with wooden balconies and plaster-decorated walls.

Sharm El Sheikh

3/12/2009 6:00:00 AM

3/12/2009 2:00:00 PM

The land of the Sinai is the "great and terrible wilderness" of the Bible, across which the Israelites journeyed in search of the Promised Land. Sharm-el-Sheikh serves as starting point for an excursion into the desert and to St. Catherine’s Monastery, the oldest Christian monastery in the world. St. Catherine’s Mountain is at 7,926 feet the highest summit in Sinai, followed by Mount Sinai, where God is said to have given the Ten Commandments to Moses. The most popular pastime in Sharm-el-Sheikh as well as in Na'ama Bay is exploring the underwater marine life. The reefs are easily accessible; diving and snorkeling equipment can be rented at watersports centers and dive shops. Glass bottom boat cruises are also popular to see the colorful underwater world. The main shopping areas are at the resort area of Na'ama Bay, located five miles from the port. Egyptian cotton, Pharaonic souvenirs and gold cartouches are popular. There are plenty of eateries at Na'ama Bay, and the hotels offer a variety of restaurants with everything from seafood to international cuisine and fast food.

Istanbul

3/18/2009 6:00:00 AM

3/18/2009

This exotic capital guards the slender waterway between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, and is the doorway between the West and the East. The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and Topkapi Sarai await-as does the Grand Bazaar, laden with carpets, beaten brass and spices from far-off lands. A walk down any backstreet gives the feeling of entering a completely different environment. Traders with handcarts, stevedores carrying burdens twice their size, limbless beggars and shoeshine boys all frequent the streets around the city center. Men monopolize public bars and teahouses, while many women cover their heads, their gaze downcast. In summer, dust tracks take the place of pavements, giving way in winter to a slurry of mud. Where there are pavements, they are punctuated at intervals with unmarked pits large enough to swallow you without trace. And this is before you even begin to cross any bridges into Asia.
